Cajun Fiddle tunes, including waltzes and two steps, will be presented. The tunes will be taught by starting with seconding. That is teaching the cords and rhythms that make up this music. The lead will then be broken down into smaller learnable pieces and added to the seconding. I will also include information on the backgrounds, traditions and people that this amazing music comes from.

There is one fact that none of us can deny – we only get one body. And, we should take good care of it. Playing music is great for our minds and our dexterity, but anyone who has played an instrument for years knows that it can also play havoc on our bodies. Overuse injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis and tendonitis are commonplace among musicians, because we really do push our bodies to the limits. This workshop will cover warmups, stretches, exercises, and cooldowns that will give you a clear path to having a healthy body as a musician.

The Scottish "snap" rhythm is delightful, but sometimes scares people when actually it is accessible and fun to play. Face your fear and find the fun!

We'll play through a couple of pieces from the Dulcimer Orchestra Library (The Finale of Beethoven's 5th Symphony) and another one. The chamber music sound of both kinds of dulcimers playing together is exquisite! Multi-part arrangements are the best.

We all know that we need to practice, but how many of us really get the most out of our practice time? In this workshop, you will learn how practice efficiently, and boost the results you generate when you practice.

Learn to play harmony fiddle. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of playing harmony parts. These concepts will them be demonstrated on a beginning and then intermediate level fiddle tune. Participants will recieve notes and sheet music to the tunes covered in the workshop.

Learn the magic behind the music. This workshop will cover music theory basics and how to apply them. We will discuss how notes and chords relate to each other, and other concepts that will give you a strong musical foundation. Additionaly, you will gain a practical understanding of why we give notes and chords numbers, and the circle of 5ths. This class will cover an introduction to improvisation and fiddling, Starting with understanding the melody. It will cover concepts of improvisation, the difference between fiddling improvisation and other forms of improvisation. Soldier's Joy will be used as the theme song for this workshop. Participants will receive sheet music for 3 different levels of improvisation on Soldier's Joy.

Beginners can be ready to play a religious tune by the end of this class! Music supplied, as well as help for HD technique, expression, and simple embellishments.

This workshop will introduce you to improvising over the 12-bar blues. We will start with a simple blues scale and build some common musical phrases from there. Beginners and experienced players alike will find it easier than they imagined to unlock this familiar genre and even find the confidence to take a solo in a blues jam.

Exploring the D-A-D tuning, called Mixolydian, we'll learn some songs & tunes in the key of D. Both the simpler, traditional style of playing the melody on just one string, as well as harmonies, chords, fingerpicking & flatpicking, will be covered.

Lyrics & chords for several vintage folk & pop songs will be presented, while exploring some basic accompaniment strumming techniques & the chord changes necessary for picking out some of the melodies for introductions & breaks.

As with many of festival-goers, Bill (who lives in Illinois) was faced with cold weather this past winter. His way of dealing with it was to write two new "Bill" tunes: "Cold Winter Night" and "Knee-Deep in Snow." Come to his class and learn them.

You will be given information about applications, its usefulness in saving printed music notation, navigating around and personalizing the iPad, tricks that you did not know it could do, fixing things when something goes wrong, and protecting your iPad and your information. If you already have an iPad, bring it with you.

This is what I love to do. Take a song that has vocals, guitar, violin, and bass and try to emulate this on the HD. Come prepared to have fun with this classic song. Learn to play my version or use my version as a stepping stone to arrange your own.

A traditional old-time dance will be held in the Community Hall featuring members of the Olde Michigan Ruffwater Strinband and friends. Caller and instructor: Glen Morningstar Jr.. In this workshop we'll look at various ways of embellishing, and the process of incorporating: melody line, embellishment, dynamics etc. - into a pleasing arrangement. We'll be using/or looking at hymns, but the same techniques could be used with other varieties of music as well.

This is a FUN fiddle tune from around the turn of the century. And as with some fiddle tunes, there is enough repetition to make learning it a little easier, but easily adaptable to use a couple of variations (in part B) that we will learn in this workshop. I hear this one quite a bit in bluegrass circles - and it is a LOT of fun on the H.D. (Sometimes spelled Cheatum)

During this workshop we will learn several techniques of "back up" playing within a band - jamming group - and also how it also pertains to singing (including some etiquette). Main thrust will be back up behind gospel/country/bluegrass music. *Enlisted to help during this session - the "Just Jammin' band" - to come and help us "back them up" Lol! (We will use different songs than last year and also have question and discussion time.)

As always, I like to teach embellishing within a context-(song), and we will use several different ways to enhance the melody line using the Hammered Dulcimer's unique charm/panache for hymns!

This year's beginner's hymn is "I Surrender All" by - Judson W. Van DeVenter (from Michigan)and music by Winfield S. Weeden. Filled with beauty, you will be able to quickly add this hymn to your playlist - even if you just bought your dulcimer!

We will play backup to lots of tunes and learn how to hear the chord changes. You must know how to play your major chords for the keys of A, D and G. This will be lots of playing.

This will be an O’Carolan tune jam session with all melody instruments welcome and rhythm & bass hopefully at levels appropriate for each specific tune. The jam will be led by concertina & accordion, so we hope that more free-reed instrument players will attend. We'll have a list of tunes and a handout with some O’Carolan tunes in standard notation. We’ll play tunes suggested by participants as long as one of us and several more participants can join in. So if you have an O’Carolan tunebook, bring it and join us. Part one was a discussion of tuning issues. This hour is devoted to hands on tuning of attendees instruments. We'll try to have a number of people there to help out so that things can get close to one on one. Attendees should have a dulcimer to tune and an electronic tuner that can be used without picking up other instruments (either a clip cord or a clip on tuner is best).

This workshop is for beginners and those who have an interest in the mountain dulcimer and would like to give it a try. A few dulcimers will be available to share. The workshop will cover holding the dulcimer, tuning, strumming, and tablature. We will learn a couple tunes and there will be time for questions.

Luigi Giorno was a marching band conductor in Philadelphia before the war, who left some manuscripts with mandolin tunes he had learned in his youth in Sicily. In this class you will learn his Tarantella Luzzitana and some other Italian tarantellas (6/8 dance tunes). The tunes sit great on mandolin and violin. Hammered dulcimer players are very welcome.

You will learn an easy dance set with three tunes (in G and C) that was played in Wallonia (Southern Belgium) in the 19th Century. The tunes "sit" very well on hammered dulcimer, but can be played on all instruments.

In this class you will learn a menuet and a polka from Paul's home country of Belgium. The tunes are from the repertoire that traditionally played on the "hommel," which is the Belgian variety of mountain dulcimer, usually tuned DAA. Tablature provided. Other instruments who can learn by ear in the key of D are welcome.

This workshop is intended for intermediate guitarists who can accompany tunes using the first position chords in common folk keys and want to add a different (Celtic) flavor to their playing. We’ll work with two jigs: Road to Lisdoonvarna (E dorian) and the Farmer’s Joy (A major and E mix) and explore different ways to accompany them.

For those who already play whistle, we'll cover long rolls, ornamenting and varying Irish jigs.

Getting started on the ($10) Irish pennywhistle - a great instrument all lovers of Irish music should learn!

Using a fun European mauzurka, we will cover basic 3/4 mazurka accompaniment (can be used for waltzes) with a "i, iv, V, i" chord pattern in harmonic minor. This also provides practice in the upper right hand corner of the instrument. This is also an excellent introduction into learning harmonic minor.

A French bourrée (dance) tune will be used to teach good hammering patterns and ear training. Fun, lively and perfect for newish players!

Everything you've always wanted to try on a mountain dulcimer but were afraid to attempt. This is a comprehensive session of exercises involving right-hand rhythm training, major and minor scales, chord shapes and performance techniques like hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, accents and harmonics. We'll introduce and play through some tunes that will utilize these tips and tricks.

This beautiful, haunting and expressive instrument dates back 4000 years on the North American continent. Originally used in courtship and later in ceremonies and, more recently, ensemble performance, the Native American flute now enjoys great popularity in all types of music. You'll be surprised at just how easy it is to play! In this workshop, you'll learn basics: flute anatomy, how to hold it, breath control, major and minor scales, ornamentation techniques and how to discover your very own spirit song.

We'll run cadence drills against a metronome to work on precision, apply a palm mute for dynamics, use selective strumming to accent individual strings, concentrate additional fill-in strums on rhythm strings while avoiding the melody in order to create a multitracked effect. We'll also get into arpeggios as filler, flatpicking, posting and fingerpicking.

Learn how to play authentic Mississippi Delta blues on the mountain dulcimer! Using DAD tuning, we'll lay down rhythms, learn to move chords, play bass lines, licks and solos and get into the heart of the blues. No 1 1/2 fret needed (but it helps.) All levels welcome!

Hymns on the hammered dulcimer are beautiful and inspirational. We will study a favorite hymn in this class, learning the melody, chord-based harmonies and embellishments, which can also be adapted to any type of music you play.

How to identify the rhthym and the key of the tune. Learn a variety chords voicings for common keys and how to "run" for one chord to another. Find out where the 1 chord, the 4 chord and the 5 chord are up and down the neck. Add a foundation for a jam session.

Two of the three keys to great hammered dulcimer presentations are dynamics and syncopation. Once you master these techniques and incorporate them into your tunes, you will find that – even though you play a tune using the exact same notes you used before, the tune will sound completely different – and much better! We will work on “Blackberry Blossom” and “La Partita”.

This is one of the three keys to great hammered dulcimer presentations. We will use “Arkansas Traveler” and “Soldier’s Joy” to learn these improve techniques. Stop memorizing what someone else does! Learn these techniques and play tunes your way!

In this class, we will learn different and interesting ways to play the last measure of lines, A-parts, B-parts, and tunes, to give them that “Irish” or “fiddle” sound. We will concentrate on “Whiskey Before Breakfast,” “Arkansas Traveler,” and “Mississippi Sawyer.”

Beginner students who have had at least one class and learned to hold the hammers and hit the strings, will learn to play major and minor box chords and diamond cords, and to use these box chords to play simple arpeggio patterns for tunes in 3/4 time and 4/4 time. Students will see how these patterns work in tunes like “Southwind” (3/4 time) and “Soldier’s Joy” (4/4 time).

Absolute beginner students will learn hammered dulcimer language (bridges, courses, marked courses, the valley, A part, B part, etc.) and the very basic skills that are necessary to quickly move to the next level of play. Includes proper hammer grip, easy tuning and set-up, basic hammering techniques, playing simple vamps, and the anatomy of the hammered dulcimer. Students will learn to play the A part of “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.” Class DOES include religious music.

I bet it has been years since you have had a spelling quiz. We will use some simple words and spell them out on the dulcimer. This is a good way to learn the various locations of your notes. Spellers of all ability welcome.

We will learn this lovely tune, Le Maison de Glace. There will be an opportunity to play melody or a harmony line while learning this song. Can't wait to hear all the different instruments playing together.

On Clawhammer banjo, learn the "Doc Watson" version of "Shady Grove".

Basic right-hand clawhammer stroke, simple left-hand chords, pulloffs, and hammer-ons, along with simple melody lines to begin to play the old-timey way. Developing a solid clawhammer rhythm will be stressed.

For guitar players who would like to start playing the ukulele. The ukulele chord structure is similar to the guitar's high four strings. Right hand standard ukulele strumming and picking will be covered. A familiar song will be taught.
